Claire producing a monkey from a hat... is actually the best job description for her. She doesn't have an official title (aside from Roger's aide/assistant), but her early duties were keeping tabs on Mac, making sure he kept his nose clean and magically making him appear at boring events he'd normally skip out on.
This was drawn for 2 reasons. To just do something 'cute,' and to test the inking with brush n' ink + copics combo, to make absolutely sure that medium would work before committing the method to my pencilled pages.
Originally I was going to draw her straightening Mac's tie, both looking kind of stuffy and put-out. But I made the comment to Neil that Claire would wear a suit/tuxedo much better than Mac ever could.
So I started drawing and then inking her in a suit, before I drew this one. It was okay. Coloring came, and disaster struck.
Turns out that copics/prismacolors + Dr. Ph. Martin india inks = FAILURE.
So much ink smudging. But, I discovered my Windsor and Newton indian ink works beautifly with the markers, and drew the version you see here.
I'll include the failed Claire drawing in a sketchdump of practices and doodles I'll scan soon.
Anyway, this was originally just gonna be 'claire looks good in a suit', but the sketch turned into this and I ended up liking it alot.
... her hair is a smidge darker than I'd have liked, but eh. LESSONS LEARNED.
The only reason I don't draw with my copics more often is the smudging. I love working with my brush pen, but it's totally incompatible with the markers. I'm so nervous about making mistakes and end drawing the same image so many times that I just lose interest. Working on the computer helps, because I can almost always salvage a failed experiment.
That said, nothing is more psychologically rewarding than the tactile connection between hand and paper. I love the immediacy of working with ink. This is fantabulous.
I love Mac's posture, and Claire's expressive face. I'm glad you found some indian ink that works with markers too (as those markers are your favorite medium :3 ).

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
